Brother Hukill:
Sect myself to Drop you a fea lines to let you know that We are all Well and hope when this come When it Will fin you all the same. We landed at Milburn Rosses[relative that moved to California prior to Civil War], on the 17th Day of this month. Mary [James' wife who moved to California due to the severe depression following the Civil War in Arkansas], and children is all Well. She liv in Graney Steal house [relative of her mother]. She has plent to eat as Milburns wife is very good to Mary, in fact tha are all good Anuf.

Mary Want you All to come as soon as you can. i has inquarred it Bout humltday And find no land there to get mary. tell me of a country below Sanfansisco [San Francisco, CA], that is good country. Som man that lived at Santaruau by the name of Losan that yhou kno in Santru sent you Word t com on down there. you cood get good homes be has Mored Donn there be sent. Word by Milburn father[Jessee Ross], in law, he has Been Down there and Wants to Sell out ad move Donn there, but to talk to Mother Ross. There is no country lin Sonomdy County [Sonoma County, California]

Brother i think Clafoney [California], is over Rated thoe it is A good country for fruit And Wheat. And no dout to is helthy. And A Man can doo Well hear if he Will. Dear Mary
This leave me well and hope it may find you and Children the same. Mary you don't want to see me enney worse than I do you but I can't till I git all my bissness sqare.
I here ___[illegible] Send you a deed to sign. I have not sold to James (he is speaking of his son, James S. Hukill Jr.), but he will make a deed to enney one that I want him to. I have [speaking of selling or trying to see to a Dr. Barnes], sold to Dr. Barnes if he can rase the money in time. Byram has returned from the Railroad. He got back on July 25. I suppose your Father and mother is with you before this time. Thay can tell you more than I can write. Go to the clerk at Santa Rosa and acknoledg this Deed and return it to me as soon as your an convenient. I will send you $5.00 and would sendyou more but your father has ___[illegible], and when I can it will be all.

Dear Husband, I have just received your wellcome letter last night dated July 11th. And it shocked me so. I did not sleep all night. And how to write, I barely on __[illegible]
Well it seem it all up my answer to do as you think best, for us all. That has bin the rule since our marriage and is yet, for you have always tried to please me. And to do what was the best for our welfare. I do not under stand the letter to ask what I would rather do. But what be for the best; so I say to do as you please. And what I think about your Death, is this: it is very uncertain business: to you as wll as me. And if I go back it will be just for your special interest. Andnot for mine after you die. I will go any where you wantme to go while you live.
Be willing to make if I was thare for times is so hard here that I don't no know wer are going to live thare is not moaney to pay taxes with anything is low. Mary Hukill to James S. Hukill

July 11 1876

Dear Wife & Connections
This leave my hand in hopes the relatians well. I have not bin down to see the doctor but he was up to see me. He wants me and you to come back here and stay whiled him and he says if I will, he will send you eney what you want to you. When he offered me one hundred dollars to send for you to come bacdk and I told him I woult counce [counsel] you about coming back. the Doctor has quit drink. He is quite sturdy now and is doing well in Arkadelpha [Arkladelphia, Arkansas]. I was at your unkle Henry's a fore day. Thay are well and want to see your verrey bad.
Mr. Houstin [Houston is Mary's younger brother] and family all well. I am cuting hay and halling it to Fort Smith. Byraum [Mary's brother], went with your father. Well begin Calefornia before this letter. I think I discover from our leters a hurt that ______[illegible]. Mary I would send you some money but your father has plenty and he gave Bud[another brother of Mary's] one hundred and twenty dollares and is going to _____[illegible] to Calafornia & which will cos $2.00. I got 2 letters the other day. Thay was about the same I was very sorey to heared that Swetat Baby [their daughter, Della] soe bad off & all harem the munfis those I hope you are all well by this time. Tell Zetta and Oregon I had not forgot them for thare kines to me and I love them.
Shall if I never should see them again nor your unkles..God bless them. I would like to heare[hear] of becoming Religious and become fit for thatre Mawters use the they yall t__ is made hard timres for it is Serten that we have one ent.____[illegible] government held me accountible or it and paid Thomas H. Scott to B. G. _____ by HH Tellay. Hive paid out thoe. ____________illegible due to water damage.
