ALEXANDER, James

James Perry "Pete" Alexander, age 89, died December 16, 2002, at Bradley County
Medical Center in Warren.

He was born July 14, 1913, in St. Paul community of Warren, the son of Henrietta
Beavers and John Alexander.

He received his education at the St. Paul School and served in the U.S. Navy during
WWII.  He married Esther Allen in 1936 and to this union one daughter, Barbara was 
born.  Later, he married Mary Mason and had a second daughter, Deborah.  He retired
after 25 years at Polatch Corporation.

Survivors include two daughters, Barbara Childs of Warren and Clara Bains of 
Milwaukee, WI; 8 grandchildren, Mildred Bradley of Milwaukee, Henrietta Collins of
Warren, Jerrilyn Dixon of Milwaukee, WI, Phyllis Childs of Warren, Pamela Childs of
Milwaukee, WI, Veronica Miller of Warren and Timothy Childs of Milwaukee, WI; 20
great-grandchildren; 8 great-great grandchildren, 4 sisters, Odessa Cole of Chicago, IL,
Pear Ware of Milwauke, WI, Willie Zell Staten of Milwaukee, WI, and Dorothy Mae 
Price of Las Vegas, NV; one brother, Jimmy Alexander of Milwaukee, WI; a very special
friend, Carlton Newton of Warren; a friend who was like his brother, Ulysses 'West'
Price; a nd a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He was preceeded in death by his parents, John and Henrietta Alexander, a daughter,
Deborah Alexander, one sister ,Beula Swift; and a nephew, John W. Allen.

Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, December 21, 2002, at St. John AME Church
in Warren, with George Beavers officating.  Johnny Johnson is pastor.  Arrangements are
by Hammons Funeral Home.


ALEXANDER, James W.

James Walker Alexander, 62, Malvern, formerly of Warren, died Feb. 19, 1990.

He was the 9th child of the late Charlton E. Alexander and his wife, the late Alberta
Beavers Alexander and was born here in Warren in 1927.

Mr. Alexander attended the public schools here.  He worked for Reynolds Metals, Jones
Mills (Hot Spring County) for over 30 years.

He was a member of the AME Church and was a Master Mason.

He was married to Birdie Franklin in 1948.

Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Birdie Alexander; two daughters, Marva Davis of California
and Mrs. Joyce Stuart of Little Rock; a son, James W. Alexander, Jr., of Ohio; five brothers,
C.E. Alexander, of Warren; the Rev. John Brunson Alexander of Altadena, California; the
Rev. Dr. T.D. Alexander of Little Rock, Lawrence Roy Lee Alexander and Billy Gene
Alexander, California; six sisters, Mrs. Mable Brent of Dermott, Mrs. Edith Ramsey, Los
Angeles, Mrs. Margaret Poindexter, California, Mrs. Bessie Gray, Los Angeles, Mrs. Sarah Ruby
Mae Haynes, California, and Mrs. Ethel Wright, Wisconsin.

Also surviving is an aunt, Mrs. Frenchie Bowie, Warren.

Funeral was held at the First Baptist Vine Street Church, Malvern, Feb. 24. Interment was at
the Masonic Cemetery, Malvern.


ALEXANDER, Pauline

Mrs. Pauline Martin Alexander, age 79, died Saturday, February 16, 2002, at Arcadia Methodist
Hospital in Arcadia, California.

She was born June 14, 1922, in Johnsville, to the late Joseph Eddie Martin and Alabama Green
Martin.

She joined St. Paul A.M.E. Church at an early age.  She later united with St. John A.M.E. Church
in Warren.  In 1960, she became a member of St. James A.M.E. Church in Warren.  During her active
years, she was a dedicated and faithful servant for the Lord in many capacities such as a stewardess,
member of the Women's Missionary Society, Sunday School Teacher, and choir member.

She was also active in numerous civic and socal organizations.  She was educated in the public
schools of Warren and was a licensed cosmetologists.

She was united in marriage to the late Samuel David Waymon Alexander, Sr., on March 6, 1943.
To this union 8 children were born.

Survivors include 3 daughers, Charlotta Marie (Waymon) Henderson of Kansas City, MO, Patsy Dean
(Ronnie) Toliver of Richardson, TX, and Gaye Ann Straw of Little Rock; 5 sons, Samuel David Waymon
(Deborah) Alexander, Jr. of Lakeview Terrace, CA, Rev. James Kenneth Levon Alexander of
Hendersonville, TN,  Ray Dan Alexander of West Covina, CA, Rev. Reginal Wesley (Linda) Alexander 
of Little Rock, and Evangelist Michael Anthony (Glenda) Alexander, Sr. of Warren; one sister, 
Cleamatha Martin Smith of Rockford, IL; 22 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces,
nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 23, 2002, at St. James A.M.E. Church.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 23, at St. James A.M.E. Church in Warren.


BAXTER, Laura Lee

Laura Lee Stalling Baxter, age 94 died October 19, 1999.

She was born August 2, 1905, in Moro Bay, AR, the daughter of Todd and Mittie Stalling.

She was a member of Power House of God in Christ, where she served on the Senior & Junior Usher
Board as President for many years.

Survivors include one sister, Maggie Jones of Elizabeth, NC; one step-son, Albert Baxter of Pine
Bluff; one goddaughter, Tondalaya Coleman of Warren; the Power House Church family; and 
numerous great nieces and nephews.

She was perceded in death by her husband, Bob Baxter, three brothers and four sisters.

Funeral services were held Saturday, October 23 at 2:00 p.m. at Power House Church of God in
Christ.  Bishop R.E. Matheney, Sr., officated.

Burial was in Shady Grove Cemetery by Hammons Funeral Home.


BELCHER, Billie Jean

Billie Jean Belcher, age 58, of Warren, died October 4, 2000, at Jefferson Regional Medical Center.

She was born March 11, 1942, the daughter of Margaret Green and the late John W. Green of
Johnsville.

She was a housewife and a member of St. Paul AME Church in Warren.

Survivors include her husband, Jessie L. Belcher of Warren; three children, Yolanda S. (Anthony)
Baldwin, Michael (Rita) Belcher, and George M. Nicks; her mother, Margaret Green; four sisters,
Carolyn (Carwell) Anderson, Sherry Smith, Stella Jackson, and Janie (Claude) Mays; three brothers,
James H. Green, Donney N. (Gladys) Green and Freddie (Stella) Green; nieces, nephews, one uncle
and one aunt.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, October 12, at St. Paul AME Church in north Warren with 
Rev. Johnny Johnson officiating.

Burial will be in St. Paul Cemetery by Hammons Funeral Home.


BELCHER, Vada

Vada Mae Belcher, age 63, died Wednesday, October 2, 2002, at Jefferson Regional Medical Center
in Pine Bluff.

She was born June 8, 1939 in Hermitage, daughter of the late Earnest and Audrey Russell.

Survivors include her husband, Roy Lee Belcher of Warren, 5 children, Ricky Belcher and 
Janet Belcher of Warren, Cassandra Belcher of Santa Clarita, CA, Scotty Belcher (Tina) of 
Arlington, TX, and Candices Belcher of Warren; 6 grandchildren; one brother, Ernest Dean
Russell (Shirley) of Strong; 2 sisters, Ruby Russell-Sapp of Atlanta, LA, and Sarah Russell-
Thomas of Warren; nieces, nephews, and other family and friends.

Funeral services were Saturday, October 5, 2002, at Holy Deliverance Church of God in Christ
with Elder Ulysses Hegler and Elder William Armour officiating. 

Burial was in El Bethel Cemetery by Hammons Funeral Home.


BELIN, Albert

Albert "Jake" Belin, age 87, died March 5, 2002, at Jefferson Regional Medical Center.

He was born September 10, 1914, in Vick, the son of the late Jesse Belin and Iva Turner.

Survivors include 2 cousins, Lillie Mae Evans and Andrew Stalling, other relatives and 
friends.

Funeral services were Tuesday, March 12, 2002, at Hammons Funeral Home Chapel with
Rev. K. Lewis Dawn Officating.

Bural was in Shady Grove Cemetery.


BELIN, Earl

Earl Belin, age 81, of Banks, died September 20, 2001, at Beverly Nursing Home.

He was born April 4, 1920, a son of the late Jim and Fannie Belin.

Survivors include his wife, Jewel Belin, one son, Earl (Shirley) Belin of Warren;
two daughters, Mary (O.C.) Marshall of Banks and Rose (Roman) Davis of Warren;
one brother, Ernest Belin of Detroit, MI; 6 sisters, Gerlean Deshazer of Monticello, 
Earlene Patter, Larrika Tucker and Ola Jones, all of Pine Bluff, Mae Cone of Milwaukee, 
WI and Minnie Simmons of Dayton, OH; 27 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren; an 
adopted daughter, Sandre Parrott; and other relatives.

Funeral services were Saturday, September 29, 2001, at New Bethel Primitive Baptist
Church, Banks with Rev. Larry Smith officiating.  Burial was in Childs Cemetery by
Hammons Funeral Home.


BELIN, Judge Jr.

Judge "Billy Boy" Belin, Jr., age 67 died July 6, 2002.  He was born November 1, 1934,
the son of the late Judge Belin, Sr., and Minnie Walter.

Survivors include his mother, Minnie Walter of Fordyce; one son, Rev. Terry (Sandra)
Gillian of Little Rock, 3 daughters, Barbara Beavers of Little Rock, Louise Childs of
Banks, and Lena Mae Crutchfriend of Lake Village; 2 sisters, Rachel (Thomas) Howard
of Jacksonville and Littie Dean Wilkins of Fordyce; 10 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren,
and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were Saturday, July 13, 2002 at Potter's House Baptist Church in Fordyce
with Rev. Gail Bryant officiating.  Burial was in Childs Cemetery by Hammons Funeral Home.


BLOCK, Gilbert

Gilbert Block, age 76, of Warren, died November 21, 2001, at the Bradley County Medical
Center.

He was born February 26, 1925 in Monticello, the son of the late Ed and Mattie Block.

He was a member of St. James A.M.E. Church.

Survivors include his wife, Willie Belle Block; 7 sons, Otis Block, Harol Block, John Block,
Ervin Bock, Eddie Block, Otis Ingram, and Gilbert Kelly Block; 11 daughters, Virginia Binns,
Rosa Scott, Minnie Rhodes, Lula Harden, Patricia Buchannan, Gail Block, Ethel Miles,
Linda Block, Mae Jane Block, Bessie Block and Mae Williams; a host of granchildren and 
great-grangchildren; one brother Eddie James Block; and one sister, Ella V. Clark.

Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, November 29, 2001, at St. James A.M.E.
Church in Warren with Rev. Jessie Washington officiating.

Burial will be in Union Ridge Cemetery, Monticello, by Hammons Funeral Home of 
Warren.


BLUEFORD, Ira Sr.

Ira V. Blueford, Sr., age 69 died March 9, 1999, in Jefferson Regional Medical Center.

He was born January 5, 1930, in Stillion, AR, the son of the late Leroy and Gracie
Blueford.

He was a retired sawmill worker and a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, south
Warren.

Survivors include four sons; Gary (Sharon) Blueford, Menifee, AR, Ira (Freda) 
Blueford, Jacksonville, AR; Cary Blueford and John Henderson, Warren; three daughters;
Mary Smith, Milwaukee, WI, Brenda (Bennie) Preston, Denver, CO, Sheila (Dewayne)
Kemp, Denver, CO; three sisters; Floree (Joel R.) Tolefree, Warren; Cleola Youngblood,
Crossett; five brothers; Willie Blueford, Pasadena, CA, Jay (Helen) Blueford, Alta Loma,
CA, Edward (Barbara) Blueford, Augusta, GA, Robert Blueford, Chino, CA, Laurance
Blueford, Milwaukee, WI; two aunts and one uncle, 30 granchildren, 24 great grand-
children, nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.

Funeral services were held Saturday, March 13, 1999 at 2:30 p.m. at Mt. Zion Baptist 
Church, south Warren.

Rev. Silas T. Warner is the pastor.

Burial was in Union Cemetery by Hammons Funeral Home.


BOLAR, Ethel

Ethel Preddy Bolar, age 91 died November 20, 2001, in Detroit, MI.  She was born 
June 21, 1910 in Wilmar, the daughter of the late Ollie and Ben Preddy.

Survivors include her son, Willie Carl, grandson, Kevin; great grand-daughter, Irian;
niece, Birdie Jefferson; cousins, J.W., Rosalee, Hester, Madeline, Jessie Dean and Bennie G,
her best firends, Louise Smith, Mr. Baker, Hottie Fannie and Gussie; other relitives and
friends.

Funeral services were Saturday, December 1, 2001, at Greater Shady Grove AME Chruch in
Wilmar with Rev. Daniels officating.

Burial was in Wilmar Cemetery by Hammons Funeral Home.


BOSWELL, Clarence "Jerry"

Clarence D. "Jerry" Boswell, age 47 of Banks, died July 21, 1999, at Baptist Medical Center in
Little Rock.

He was born August 24, 1951, the son of George and Lummie Boswell of Banks.

He was a Hi Tech production worker.

Survivors include his parents, George and Lummie Boswell of Banks; two sisters, Helen J. Callum
and Kenisha N. Boswell of Banks; one brother, Michael R. Boswell of Banks, his grandmother,
Josie Boswell of Warren; nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be hold Wednesday, July 28, at 1:00 p.m. at the Hermitage Community
Center in Hermitage.

Elder Berry Huddleston and Elder Larry Smith will officiate.

Burial will be in Childs Cemetery by Hammons Funeral Home.


BOSWELL, Josephine "Josie"
 
Josephine (Josie) Boswell was born to the union of the late Columbus and Fannie (Childs)  Green
on June 15, 1902. She departed this life, at the age of 101, on June 27, 2003 at Bradley County 
Medical Center. 

In October of 1920 she united in Holy Matrimony with Dewey Boswell. To this union nine 
children were born. 

She  accepted Christ in her life at an early age at New Bethel Primitive Baptist Church of Banks, 
Arkansas, where she attended faithfully until her health failed. She also served as one of the 
Mothers of her church for several years. 

She was a loving, caring and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend.  Her smile and
humor touched the lives of everyone she knew.

Josie was preceded in death by her husband, Dewey Boswell and her daughter, Mozelle Bradley.
 
She leaves to cherish her memories; Five daughters: Ruby Lee Childs of Warren, AR., Golena Childs,
Dorothy Davis (Roy) of Banks, AR; Jettie May Clay (Sonny) of Portland, OR; Lummie Jean Gilbert
of Los Angeles, CA; Three sons; George (G.D.) Boswell (Lummie), Travis Boswell (Dorothy) of Banks,
AR; Marion (M.C.) Boswell of Portland, OR; One sister: Marie Brunson of Pine Bluff, AR; Two
maternal grandsons; Robert Momon of Banks, AR; Roger Boswell of New Edinburg, AR; One
god-child; Tyrone Davis of Warren; One special niece; Marie Haley, and one special nephew; 
James Brunson (Debra),  twenty-eight(28) grandchildren, four (4) step great children, a host of great
and great, great grandchildren and several great great great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, 
nephews, relatives and friends.

BOWIE, Emma

Emma Bowie, age 97, died March 9, 1999, at Wagnon Place Nursing Home.

She was born January 3, 1902, in Bradley County, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry
Roberts.

She was a housewife and a member of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors include one son, Hugh Floyd of Kansas City, MO; one grandson, three granddaughers,
nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Saturday, March 13, at 11:00 a.m. at Mt Zion Missionary Baptist Church,
north Warren.

Rev. Eddie Rice officiated.

Burial was in St. Paul Community Cemetery by Hammons Funeral Home.


BRIGGS, Ernestine P.

Ernestine Preston Briggs, age 63, of Lake Village, died Wedesday, December 9, 1998, at 
UAMS Hospital in Little Rock.

She was born October 11, 1935, at Jersey in Bradley County, the daughter of the late Ernest
and Jeanette Thomas Preston.

At age fourteen, she united with St. Matthew Baptist Church, Moro Bay, AR. Later she united
with Amy Tatum A.M.E. Church, Jersey, AR.  After moving to Lake Village, she united with St. Peter
A.M.E. Church.

She was a graduate of Westside High School, (now Hermitage High School), attended Shorter
College of North Little Rock and received her B.A. Degree from AM&N College (now UAPB), Pine
Bluff.  She received her M.A. degree in Elementary Education from University of Arkansas,
Fayetteville.

She retired from Lakeside School District after thirty plus years of service, held membership in
Arkansas Education Association and served in several ofices at the local level.

She was also active in the South Arkansas Conference Branch of the Woman's Missionary Society
and held the office of 2nd Vice President.

She was Associate Matron of Bea Gilbert Chapter #343 of the Order of Eastern Star and member of
E.U Read Assembly #78 of the Order of the Golden Circle.

She married Edward L. Briggs on August 21, 1969.

Survivors include her husband, Edward L. Briggs, Lake Village; one daughter, Edwina Briggs, Pine
Bluff; one son, Elten Dewan Briggs, Oklahoma City, OK; six sisters, Velma Purifoy, Jersey, Opal
Jean Goldsby, North Little Rock, Lacyrene Banks, Mable Johns (Andrew), Bessie Montgomery (Leo),
Lue Ella Pickette (Carrol), Los Angeles, CA; one brother, Lee Ester Preston (Irma), Los Angeles, CA;
three aunts, Ethel Jackson, Oakland, CA, Mae Lee Preston, Warren, and Eva Preston, Harrell; three
brothers-in-law and five sisters-in law.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, December 15 at 11:00 a.m. at Christian Liberty Baptist Church in
Lake Village.

Burial was in A.T. Cemetery in Jersy by Hammons Funeral Home.


BROUGHTON, Mary

Mary Eliza Broughton, age 53 of Banks, died January 1, 2002 at her home.

She was born April 11, 1948, the daughter of Billy and Myrtie Broughton.

Survivors include her mother, Myrtie Broughton of Banks; one son, David A. Broughton of Banks; 3
brothers, Albert (Clara Mae) Broughton of Jersey, Rev. Earl (Virda) Broughton of Banks, and
Joe (Clara C.) Broughton of Little Rock; one sister, Jewell L. Davis of Banks; one special aunt, Jewell
Belin, and 4 other aunts; one great-aunt, Mary L. Preston of Warren; one uncle, Joe Broughton of 
MaRouge, LA; one great-uncle, Willie Childs of Banks; nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by a brother, William Broughton.

Funeral services were Monday, January 7, 2002, at New Bethel Primitive Baptist Chruch in Banks.
Rev. Earl Thomas officiated.

Burial was in Childs Cemetery by Hammons Funeral Home.


BROWNING, Lillie

Lillie Faye Browning, age 72, of Warren, died Saturday, May 20 at Wagnon Place Nursing Home.

She was born May 13, 1923 at Lillie, Louisiana, a daughter of the late Luke Brownings.

She was a retired live-in house-keeper and a member of th St. James AME Chruch.

Surviving is a brother, Grady Browning, Warren.

Graveside services were 4:00 p.m. Monday, May 22, by Rev. David Stelle and Rev. L.V. Tolefree.

Burial was in Oakland Cemetery by Frazer's Funeral Home.

(Note: no year given for death, but from year of birth and 72 years later would bring the death year
of 1995).


BURNS, Jesse

Jesse Burns, age 82, of Warren, died November 8, 1999, at his home.

He was born February 9, 1917, the son of the late Harvey and Mary Burns.

He was a retired lumber mill worker.

Survivors include 1 uncle, Vivian Harris, Kansas City, MO; 1 step-daughter, Lizzie Mae Taylor, 
Chicago, IL; 1 sister and brother-in-law, Susie and Curtis Darrough, Warren; 2 step granchildren, 
Ginger and Janet Taylor, Chicago, IL; cousins, Olivess Robertson, Little Rock; Francis Mary 
LeGrande, Vallejo, CA; Theodis Walsh.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, November 17, at 3:00 p.m. at Holy Deliverance Church
of God in Christ in South Warren.  Elder William Armour will officiate. 

Burial will be in Union Cemetery by Hammons Funeral Home.


BUTLER, Geraldine B.

Geraldine Bradley Butler, age 95, of Los Angeles, California, died September 26, 2000 at the Vernon
Convalescent Nursing Home in Los Angelse.

Born March 3, 1905 in warren, she was the daughter of the late Jerry and Ida Mae Bradley.  She received
her formal education in the public school system in Warren.

On September 17, 1937, she married Robert Butler, Sr. and in 1943 they relocated to Los Angeles, Calif.
where she united with Second African Methodist Espiscopal Church in 1946.  She remained a faithful member
for 54 years.  She was a member of the Opportunity Club, Mary A. Campbell Women's Missionary Society,
Past-President of the Class Leaers Council and of Church Women United.  She was also a member of the
American Cancer Society, American REd Cross, and she volunteered for many years at the California
Medical Center Hospital in Los Angeles and participated in Senior citizens activities.  She led a very full
and spirted life.

She is survived by one brother, James T. Bradley of Hayward, CA; two step sons, Robert Butler, Jr. of
Dermott and Lester Jones of Los Angeles; one sister-in-law, Ozelle Minton of Warren; one brother-in law,
Howard Butler of Warren; five generations of nices an nephews, other relatives and friends.

Her husband, Robert Butler, preceded hr in death in 1988.  Her niece, Linda Wooley Jasinsk, whom whe
raised as her daughter, preceded her in death in 1993.

Funeral services were Saturday, October 7, 2000, at Second African Methodist Episcopal Church of Los
Angeles with Rev. Gregory H. Herndon, Pastor, officiating.  Edna Williams and the Sanctuary Choir of 
Second Church provided music.  Interment followed at Inglewood Park Cemetery in Inglewood, CA.

Active pallbearers were Sanfuel Jones, James Riley, David M. Childress, Julius Levy, James C. Lowe and 
Harold Woodson, Jr.

Angelus Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


BUTLER, Larry

Donell "Larry" Butler, age 52 of Warren, died Saturday, May 25, 2002, in New Edinburg.

He was born October 30, 1949, the son of Wavion and Rosetta Butler.  He was a member of Union Hill
Missionary Baptist Church and employed by Maxwell Flooring.

Survivors include his wife, Linnie M. Butler of Warren; his mother, Rosetta Butler of Warren; 4 step-
children, David Smith, Lekeiska Smith, Aaron Kolen and Valerie Kolen, all of Milwaukee, WI; one son,
Shawn Furlough of Little Rock; one daughter, Janara Jenkins of Milwaukee, WI; 4 brothers, Wavion
Butler, Jr., and Tyrone Butler, both of Warren, Jerry Butler of Milwaukee, WI, and Billy (Velvert) Butler
of Camden; 2 sisters, Gladys (Vernell) Davis of Warren and Renee (Rick) Downs of Milwaukee, WI; 4 
grandchildren; two very special friends, Eugene "Giggum" Phillips and John Glosson of Warren;
uncles, aunts, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were Saturday, June 1, at Union Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Warren with Rev. K.
Lewis Dawn officiating.  Burial was in Harmony Cemetery in Sparkman by Hammons Funeral Home.


BUTLER, Mrs. Lubbie

Mrs. Lubbie L. Butler, 100, was born on May 29, 1895 in Dallas County.

She departed this life May 1, 1996 in Arkadelphia at Riverwood Nursing Home.

She was married to the late Meddra Butler on November 16, 1913 and to this union, eleven children
were born.

Three preceded her in death.

Survivors include six sons, Ira Butler, William Butler, and Harry Butler, all of Malvern; Wavion Butler
and I.V. Butler, both of Warren; and Espen Butler of Sparkman; two daughters, Everlee Lambert of 
Fordyce and Beatrice Mendenhall of Hot Springs; 54 grandchildren, 103 great grandchildren, and a host
of relatives and friends.
