POOLE, Dorothy Mae

Dorothy Mae Poole, 56, Hermitage, died April 18.

Mrs. Pool was born in 1935 at Hermitage to Ernest and Audrey Russell.  She married
Leodis Poole in 1952.  Her survivors include her husband; 2 daughters, Wanda Sue
Sims and Dorothy Durden, Hermitage; a son, Ken Poole of Miami; 5 grandchildren;
2 brothers, Ernest and Vernon Russell, Hermitage; 3 sisters, Sara Thomas, Warren,
Vada Belcher of Warren, and Ruthie Sapp of Winnfield, La.

Funeral was Saturday at one at the First Baptist Church of Hermitage where Rev.
Bobby Young serves as minister.

He was assisted by the Rev. Danny Ray Phillips.

Interment was at Marsden.

Pallbearers were Ray Miller, Nathaniel and James Jones, and George Vaughn.

Honorary pallbearers were Dean Russell, James Thomas, James Durden, Vernon Russell,
Tony Russell, Bobby Sims and Kenneth Poole.

PRESTON, Mary Lee

Mary Lee Preston, 98 of Warren, died Wednesday, February 22, at Wagnon Place
Nursing Home.

Born March 19, 1907 in Jersey, she was a daughter of the late Jack and Lula Childs.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lummie Preston; one daughter, Eulla Gill;
and two sons, Robert Preston and John L. Preston.

Survivors include three sons, Johnny L. Preston of Warren, Bennie C. Preston and wife 
Brenda of Aurora, Colo., and Robert Preston of Grady; three daughters, Vernita Phillips and
husband James, Mary Watson and Bobbie Womley, all of Warren; one brother, Willie Childs
and wife Frances of Jersey; 34 grandchildren; 102 great grandchildren; and 55 great great
grandchildren.

Funeral services were March 2 at New Bethel Primitive Baptist Chruch with Elder
Larry Smith and Bishop Chester Thompson officiating.

Burial was in Childs Cemetery with arrangements by Hammons Funeral Home of Warren.


RAGLAND, Arton, Jr.

Arton Ragland, Jr., age 67, of Los Angeles, California, died Friday, October 4, 2002.

He was born November 6, 1934, a son of the late Arton Ragland, Sr. and Euila Ragland.

"Tom" attended the Wilmar Public Schools and started working at a young age.  He married
Alice Parlene Robinson June 12, 1954.  They relocated to Los Angeles where he was 
employed by Norris industries as a machine operator and forklift driver until his retirement in
1992.

Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Alice; 5 daughters, Dorothy Sue Lamb (Eddie) of
Monticello, Ann Webb (Clifford) of Wilmar, Deathra, Raquel and Antonia of Los Angeles; one
son, Jim Reddix; one adopted daughter, Elzie Amos; 8 brothers and sisters, Jimmy Fred
German, Margeline Bankhead (Grover), Clemie C. Herman, Evelyn Jackson, Sylvia Shorter,
Barbara Ann Ragland and Annette Ridgell, all of Wilmar, and Kenneth (Bertha) of Compton,
CA.; 13 grand children, great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews, cousins and
friends.

Funeral services were Saturday, October 12, at Phillips Temple CME Chruch with Rev. John
Deron Johnson officiating.  Interment was in Inglewood Park Cemetery in Inglewood, California,
by Paradise Mortuary.

Active pallbearers were family members.

Honorary pallbearers were Eric Lewis, Jr., Eric Lamb, Kenneth Ragland, Willie Riley, Sr.,
Jim Reddix and Vincent Parks.


REMLEY, Robert J.

Robert James Remley, age 71, died October 8, 1999 at Wagnon Place Nursing Home.

He was born August 6, 1928, in Warren, the son of Robert and Callie Remley.

He was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Chruch, south Warren.

Survivors include his wife, Daisy Jean Remley; 1 daughter, Janet Jenkins, Pasadena, CA; 
2 sisters, Hattie Hodges and Marquerita Patton of Warren; 4 grandsons, a host of great
grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Thrusday, October 14, at 1:00 p.m. at Mt. Zion Baptist Church,
south Warren.

Rev. Silas Warner, pastor, will officiate.

Burial will be in Union Cemetery by Hammons Funeral Home.


RICE, Eva Jean

Eva Jean Rice, age 61, died February 23, 2001, at the Bradley
County Medical Center.

Born August 19, 1939, in New Edinburg, she was the daughter of
Alfonso Hardaway and Vera Barnett.

She received her education at Bradley County High School and 
the University of Arkansas at Monticello.  She served as
superintendent of the Jr. Sunday School Department, Sunday 
School Teacher, and member of the Mother's Aid Board, member
of the Christian Board of Education.  She also worked in the
Mission Department.

Survivors include her husband, Eddie Rice, Jr.; 7 children, Terry
(Ruth) Correll, Kamilah Rice, both of Warren, James Daniels of 
Monticello, Sandra (Bobby) Harding, Evelyn Davis, Terrence (Gayle)
Burks, all of Atlanta, Georgia, and Tyrone Burks of Fort Benning, 
Georgia; one brother, Earl (Edna) Hardaway of Crossett; one sister, 
Opal (Tom) Thompson of San Marcos, California; 15 grandchildren,
two of whom she raised as her own, Charlie Hardaway of Tulsa,
Oklahoma and Veronica Hardaway of Little Rock; 2 great-
grandchildren, a very special niece, Linda Hampton; and life long
friend, Robbie Green; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Eddie and
Hazel Rice, Sr.; 4 sisters-in-law and 4 brothers-in-law; and a host
of nieces, nephews and friends.  Three children preceded her in
death.

Funeral services were Tuesday, February 27, 2001 at Powerhouse
Church of God in Christ with Bishop R.E. Matheney, Sr., officiating.
Burial was in Bethel Cemetery in New Edinburg.

Pallbearers were Deon Ridgell, Johnny Fisher, Sr., Sherman 
Preddy, Billy Ridgell, Larry Burton and Kevin Risby.

Honorary pallbearers were Terry Correll, James Daniels,
Tyrone Burks, Terrance Burks, Charlie Hardaway and Robbie Green.


RICHARD, Edna Lee

Edna Lee Broadnax Richard, age 90, died recently.

Born July 23, 1910, in Dermott, she was the daughter of the late
Frank and Matilda Mason Broadnax.

She was a member of Union Hill Baptist Church where she was a 
member of Circle of the Missionary Women's Union.

Survivors include four sons, Joe Richard, Jr., Memphis, TN, Curley
(Linda) Richard, East Hartford, CT, Willie (Bella) Richard, Raytown, MO.,
Louvull (Debbie) Richard, Sr., Kansas City, MO., three daughters, 
Augustine (George) Cooper, San Diego, CA, Mattie (Elliot, Ar.) Eley, 
Kansas City, MO., Delois Kinlow, Milwaukee, WI; one sister, Ethel
Johnson, Tallulah, LA; 31 grandchildren; 2 step grandchildren; 51 great-
grandchildren, 21 great great-grandchildren, 2 great great great-grandchildren,
2 nieces; 1 nephew; and other relatives and friends.  She was married to the 
late Roosevelt Green and Joe Louis Richards, Sr.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 17, at 11 a.m. at Union
Hill Misionary Baptist Church.

Burial will be in Union Cemetery by Hammons Funeral Home.

ROGERS, Mrs. Donnie

Mrs. Donnie Roers, 91, died March 15, 1992, at Pine Lodge.

She was the wife of the late Lucius Johnson and the late Andrew Wheeler.
She was a ward of James T. Trotter.

She was a daughter of the late Peter Rogers and the late Lizzie Green.

She had a daughter and a son.

She was a member of the Antioch Baptist Chruch.

Survivor include a half brother and a number of grandchildren, nieces and
nephews.

Funeral was at Antioch Baptist Church of Johnsville on March 21 at one with Rev. 
Grover Robinson serving as officiant.

Interment was at Antioch.

Pallbearers were Ernest and Burton Newton, Clyde Hemphill, Kenneth Gant,
Frederick and Raymond Hampton.

Ladies who served as ushers were Susie B. Hampton, Jeannette Simmons, Eva
Nell Harris and Carlean Hemphill.


ROSS, Booker

Booker Thomas Ross, age 80, died May 2, 2002, in the St. Francis Hospital,
Lynwood, California.

Born November 3, 1921, in Warren, he was the son of Monroe and Velma
Ross.

He was a Veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Army from
1942 until 1946, when he received an Honorable discharge.  He relocated to
Los Angeles after his discharge and began his employment with Goodyear
Tire and Rubber Company in 1947.  He retired in 1980 after 33 years of service.
Later, he started a second career as a crossing guard for the Los Angeles
Unified School District.

In July 1948, he married Bobbie Mae Jackson, who preceded him in death.
In October 1990, he married Velma Jones.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, Calvin Jackson and Rickie Ross;
one daughter, Margie Slechter; one son-in-law; two daughters-in-law; one 
brother, one uncle and aunt; 6 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; and a host
of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were May 9, 2002, at The Chapel of Sacred Memories, Harrison-
Ross Mortuary, with Rev. W. Jerome Fisher officiating.  Interment was at Angeles
Abby Memorial Park, Compton, CA.

Pallbearers were Jesse Brew, Cottrell Parlor, Jon Reed, Timothy Henry,
DeWayne Reed and K. W. Watts.

Honorary pallbearers were Calvin Jackson, Anthony Ramsey, Cedric Ross,
Rickie Ross, Preston Perry, Richard Ramsey, Dontae Ross and Robert Slechter.


ROSS, Henry Jackson

Henry Jackson Ross, 80, well known citizen of central Bradley County; died
January 17, 1990, at the VA Hospital in North Little Rock.

Mr. Ross operated his own construction business, ere (should be before?) retirement
both in California and Texas.

He was born March 8, 1909 to the late Samuel L. and Ever Cowser Ross in the
Mount Olive Community here in Bradley County.

He was a longtime member of the Mt. Olive AME Chruch.

He had married the former Marjoire Ward in Houston, Texas, on June 19, 1952.
They had a son, James J. Ross.

He also shared his home with Mrs. Edith M. Strong and Joe D. Callum of 
Pasadena, California and Reginald Spates of Houston, Texas.

He was a member of the Independent Owners and Operators Union, the Court
of Calanthe Lodge No. 113 in Houston, the NAACP and the Urban League of 
Pasadena.

In addition to his wife and son, he also leaves two brothers, Quincy D. Ross
and William B. Ross, Compton, California; four sisters, Mrs. Theodis Webb of
Johnsville, Mrs. Creola Callum of Mt. Olive, Mrs. Addie Ellison of Harvey, Ill., and
Mrs. Ozie B. Callum of Pasadena.

Funeral was Saturday at Mt Olive Chruch.


RUSSELL, "Girlie"

Lillie Mae "Girlie" Russell, age 80 of Warren, died Monday, January 4, 1999 at
Bradley County Medical Center in Warren.

Born March 28, 1918 in Cleveland County, she was a foster-grandparent at the
Southeast Arkansas Human Development Center for 17 years.  She was a member
of the Mt. Zion Baptist Chruch where she was a Sunday School Teacher, choir
member and deaconess.

She was the widow of the late Curley Russell, Sr. who died August 4, 1991.

Survivors include 4 daughters, Ida Vaughn of Omaha, Nebraska, Georgia Gray, 
Irma Baldwin and Linda Smith, all of Warren; seven sons, Curley, Jr., of 
Kansas City, Missouri; Clarence, James and Robert of Denver, CO., Howard of
Omaha, Nebraska, John and Pau of Warren; one sister, Leila Richards of 
Los Angeles, California, 43 grandchildren, fifty great grandchildren, and 1
great great-grandchild.

Services were held Saturday, January 9, 1999 at Union Hill Baptist
Chruch at 11:00 a.m. Rev. S.T. Warner officiated.

Burial was in Union Cemetery by Reddick Funeral Home.

Active pallbearers were the Mt. Zion Brotherhood.
