NOTES FROM JANN WOODARD One of the leading sources of information for the family researcher is the published obituary. Finding an obituary in Bradley county prior to 1930 is next to impossible, unless an old copy of the newspaper can be found in the possession of a private individual. It would appear that many copies were lost in the fire which occurred during the publication days of Duvall Purkins. Seldom do we find any obituaries of that era in the state paper unless the deceased were held in high esteem by the community or some unlawful action caused a death. The Pine Bluff Commercial published a few from Bradley county, but there again, it was mostly prominent people. Many researchers are unaware of two of the most useful sources for obituaries, and when I found several articles in my search, a decision was made to extract as many obituaries of people with Bradley county connections as possible. Those two sources are the Arkansas Methodist Newspaper and the Arkansas Baptist Advance which were published in Little Rock. This compilation contains only the obituaries extracted from the Arkansas Methodist Newspaper. It is microfilmed with a beginning date of 1884. My intent was to extract from that time until 1930, when microfilming begins of the Eagle Democrat in Warren. The pastors of Methodist churches wrote obituaries for most all deceased people of their respective congregations and submitted them to the state paper. Usually dates of birth and death are given, and often times places of birth are listed, but mostly they are of religious connotation. Not only did pastors submit these, but sometimes even family members composed them. The paper was published weekly and most Methodists subscribed to the publication. Anyone wanting to obtain information on the various Methodist ministers who submitted obituaries may find the book, "Lest We Forget, or Character Gems Gleaned from South Arkansas," by Rev. J.W. Riggin, very interesting. This book contains histories of most ministers who served the Warren, Palestine, Jersey and New Edinburg circuits during the period of 1884 until 1930. Jann Woodard 1997
