Paragould the county seat is a bustling little city of 6,500 progressive white people there being not more than 50 colored persons in the city. Surrounded by a good farming and timber country, Paragould has good railway facilities, with three lines now in operation and two more projected. Good sidewalks and crossings and electric street lights make it easy to reach all parts of the city at all hours. The altitude of Paragould is greater than that of any other city in the state , outside of the mountain district. This together with an abundance of good water at depths ranging from 50 to 150 feet makes Paragould one of the healthiest places in the southwest. A system of drainage canals aggregating 78 miles is now under construction and will greatly enhance real estate values in both city and county. The extensive farming interests of the county are admirably supplemented by the industrial and commercial interests of the city, including a $500,000 railway round house, several wholesale houses and fifteen factories. Now a city of the first class, Paragould has free mail delivery, a good public school system, several private schools, a business college, a well-equipped sanitarium, ten churches, two good newspapers one of which is a daily, four banks and 65 business houses. There are now under construction a 78 mile drainage canal system, a modern sewer system, a $15,000 church and a $35,000 high school building. As a prosperous, progressive and moral city Paragould stands unrivaled in this section and gives promise of a still more splendid future.
