The Barber Cemetery, Sims, Arkansas

November 29 2008. Photo taken by Olwyn.
Looking south.

The Barber Cemetery is an active and well maintained cemetery just north of Sims on the left heading towards the Sims Loop Road. Easy to find. It is fenced and is maintained by the Lone Valley - Barber Cemetery Association. Has a covered shelter about 32 feet by 16 feet with pews.  There are a few unnamed graves marked with moss covered field stones. Photos taken on a chilly afternoon November 29 2008 by O.W. I walked the rows starting taking photos from the left front, No. 187, going back and forth until the last headstone at 328. Images, 141, are in numerical order but reverse order on web pages and the pages numbers don't necessarily match the rows. In 1987 there were 88 graves marked, mostly with cement blocks, but with no names. The south end has six to eight graves that are not even visible, but were there in the 1940s. Barber's Oller

Lewis Miller Barber was born 6 Jan 1856 in South Fork Twp, Montgomery Co. AR. His parents were Ransom Barber and Cynthia McConnell. Lewis Barber died 6 Feb. 1948 in Marianna, Lee Co., AR. He married Dollie Ann Summitt 13 Jan. 1877 in Montgomery Co., AR. She was the daughter of John Francis Summitt and Emaline Shaffer. They sold the land known as the Bill Carter place and homesteaded a big tract of land north of Sims, near the foot of the Chalybeat Mountain which was near his wife's family. Louis sold it off down to one hundred seventy acres and donated one acre for a cemetery, which is known as the Barber Cemetery. Louis built a big one room house out of logs that they cut themselves, then as his family increased, they added to the log house. He then married Florence Eurilla Regue Ollar 22 Aug. 1907 in Sims, Montgomery Co, AR. daughter of William Ollar and Matilda Jones. Find a Grave 152 interments listed as of Nov. 2010.
