Patricia Welch; December 28, 1997  Q094

I'm looking for information re Wyatt families on the 1850 Dallas Co., Arkansas census.  I found Wyatt marriages in that county as early as 1845. The land records show transactions of John and Samuel Wyatt 1854-1859. My great-grandmother was Sarah Ann Wyatt (age 10 in 1850, b. Ga) --she married a Welch and she and her father Jesse Wyatt cannot be located in 1860.  The family was in San Augustine Co., Texas in 1870--she a widow with two children:  Wm David and Mary Elizabeth Welch. Jesse Wyatt, (b. abt 1819, Ga) wife was Mary, (b. abt 1819 Ga).   Children listed in the 1850 census were:  Sara age 10, Nancy, age 7, William, age 5(b.Ar), Moses, age 2 (b.Ar).  I cannot locate a marriage record for Jessie. Samuel Wyatt (b. abt 1790) was possibley married to Sarah Ann Sheffield 22 Aug 1808, Jasper Co. Ga.  Dallas Co. marriage record shows he married Mary H. Laurence on 25 December 1949.  I believe children of Samuel and Sarah were: John Wyatt(b. 1810 Ga) and m. Elizabeth Bledsoe in Henry Co. Ga. This couple are also on the 1850 Dallas Co. census.; Jesse; Samuel (b. abt 1821 Ga) m. Elizabeth Jackson in Henry Co. Ga; William (b. 1826) Ga. m. Mary Jane Smith 27 Aug 1848 in Dallas Co. Ark; Nancy, Sarah A. m John Higginbotham 26 Jul 1850 Dallas Co. Ark; Rebecca (b. 1834 Ga) m William Sullivan 20 Sep 1849 Dallas Co.,Ark; and Susan Wyatt (b 1834 Ga) m. Jospeh Colbert 20 Sept 1849 Dallas Co., Ark. Would appreciate corresponding with anyone regarding this family--it seemsto have been one of the pioneers of the county because of a land grant.

Jeff Olsen; October 27, 1997 Q090
My name is Jeff Olsen, and I'm a freshman at the University of Southern California. My mother is Debbie Dallas, the last of the Dallas family (as far as we're aware). She's a direct descendant of George Mifflin Dallas, but we have little of our family history. There was some research done ny my grandmother some years back establishing the family link, but that has all been lost. So if you have any sort of information on Gerorge Mifflin Dallas at all, it would be greatly appreciated. Even if you don't have any sort of a family tree, we would love to know why the county of Dallas was named in his honor, or ANY other information you might have to this effect. ANY information, even other research suggestions, would be greatly appreciated.

My great grandfather was Edwin Samuel Taylor who lived in Princeton Township from about 1847, after he came out from Virginia to join his siblings, until he died in 1895. Taylor family research show that the local tax records for 1848 list him as owning one slave, valued at $450. To explore this further, I wrote to the Arkansas History Commission and asked that they check the slave census. Dr. Ferguson replied that the Nov. 1, 1850 U. S. Census, Slave Schedules show that E. S. Taylor of Princeton owned five slaves, two adults and three children. The 1860 census did not list him as owning any slaves. I would like to find out as much as I can about this matter: did he bring them with him from Virginia, exactly how many he owned, for how long, their names, what happened to them, etc. Do you have any suggestions or do you know someone locally who could research this for me. Any advice will be appreciated. I have found your query page quite useful both in locating sources of information and in providing replies to other inquiries. I am seeking information about the Civil War service of my great grandfather from Dallas County, George Willis
Green. His name does not appear in the Civil War service records of either the Arkansas History Commission or the National Archives. However, his widow, Mary Ann Mann Green, applied for a widow's pension based on his service under "Geo. D. Alexander" from l862-64. The state historian thinks that George Willis Green served in a unit known originally as the "Tulip Rifles" formed by George Douglass Alexander of Tulip but for some reason his name is not on any official rosters. The Tulip Rifles became Company I (Eye) of the Third Arkansas Infantry. Does anyone have a roster of either the Tulip Rifles or Co. Eye of the Third Infantry? Any help will be much appreciated. J. I'm looking for descendants of (1) Thomas J. BARNER of Jackson, Dallas Co., AR; his brother, Franklin Barner, and descendants of E. H. M. PARHAM (wife, Tabitha Ann BARNER). The BARNER/PARHAM families originated in Brunswick Co., Virginia before migrating to Dallas Co., AR. Some of the BARNER clan might have changed spelling to BONNER. There is a BARNER Family Research Page that deals primarily with this BARNER family who appear to be of French Huguenot ancestry (descendants of John and Anne BARNER/BERNARD of Manakintown, Powhatan Co., Virginia). There is a link to it on the Brunswick Co., VaGenWeb page.

Maria (or Mary)Russell, b 1822, Dickson Co, Tn, d 1900 Dallas Co, Ar m Jan 1839 to Joseph Gray. Mary was daughter of Jesse Russell and Mary Farrar Hudson. Jesse died 1843, Dallas Co, Maria or Mary died 1874 in Dallas Co. In 1870 Census, the elder Mary was living with Mary and Joseph Gray, I believe in Salinas Township. I suspect Jesse and Mary's family bible, assuming they had one, is in the hands of one of Maria and Joseph's descendents. I would certainly like to know for sure. Joseph Gray and Maria Russell's known children were: Mollie, George, Lucy, Frank, Joseph, Mary, William, Wilma, Indiana, and Clyde Leslie. I would certainly be interested in hearing from any of these folks descendents.

I'm looking for information on WILLA (SWEETIE) BROWN WOZENCRAFT, who died about 1960. She and her husband, DR. WILLIAMWOZENCRAFT, lived there early in the century (as had his ancestors) before moving to Fayetteville. His 1972 death certificate indicates that he was buried in Holly Springs Cemetery, and I assume that she was as well. I'm not even sure whether Holly Springs itself still exists. Could you possibly tell me whether there is an active Holly Springs Cemetery and, if not, whom else I might write to to get a burial date for WILLA BROWN WOZENCRAFT? Many thanks, Bill Joyce
