1. Elizabeth Burnes, born 1813 in Georgia; died Abt. 1870 in Marion County, Arkansas. She was the daughter of 2. James Burnes and 3. Charlotte Holtzclaw. She married (1) Thomas Burnes 1829 in Tennessee. He was the son of Charles Frederick Burnes and Hardy.

Notes for Thomas Burnes:

He came to Marion Co., AR in 1852 in time to pay taxes in June of 1852. He brought his 10 children with him and his wife, Elizabeth Holtzclaw Burnes, daughter of Charlotte Holtzclaw and James Burnes. Charlotte Holtzclaw is a descendant of Jacob Holtzclaw, the Immigrant, from Oberfischbach, Germany, part of the Germanna Settlement in Culpepper Co., VA, arriving in 1714. **Sources: "History of Marion County," by Earl Berry; "Genealogies of Marion County Families, 1811-1900"; "Pioneer Life and Times," by Earl Berry and "Ancestry and Descendants of the Nassau-Siegen Immigrants To Virginia 1714-1750," by BC Holtzclaw.

Thomas S. Burnes applied for a "Pension of the Father" in 1888 on his son, John F. Burnes, Bugler in the 1st Regiment, Arkansas Cavalry, Company "H", Union Army, Civil War. I have copies of the Pension papers, which include statements from: John Smith, son-in-law to Thomas Burnes; Elizabeth Louisa(Mears/Burnes) Smith, second wife of John Smith; James W. Burnes, brother of Thomas Burnes; and Charlotte Barbara (Burnes) Goodall, daughter of Thomas Burnes.

Notes for John W. Smith:

Buried in the Burnes Cemetery in Marion Co., Arkansas. Witness in the Pension of a Father, filed by his father-in-law, Thomas S. Burnes, in 1888. His wife, Julia Ann Burnes, had died in 1875 and John Smith was married to Elizabeth Louisa (Mears) (Burnes) Smith at the time of the Pension application. Louisa was the wife of Julia Ann's brother, Calvin Burnes, they had divorced several years before. Louisa Smith also was a witness in the Pension of a Father.

Served in the Union Army during the Civil War, enlisting in Searcy Co., AR. He became a doctor and practiced in Marion and Searcy Co., AR. He was married 3 times and reared large families from each marriage. On Jan. 26, 1862, he married Elizabeth Mears, they lived together until 1876, when they divorced and she married John Smith, widower of Julia Ann Burnes. On Oct., 19, 1876, Calvin married Rosa Kyles. She died in 1888. After Rosa Kyles died, Calvin married 19 year old Tabitha Stevens. Founded the Cumberland Valley community of Hogetown, PA, about 8 miles west of present Harrisburg. He built a church there in 1734, to which he gave a hammered pewter communion service and a pulpit bible that were still in use about 1925.
