Mr. RHOADES was born January 11, 1945 at Jefferson, Iowa to Darrell Edward RHOADES and wife. On June 6, 1998, he got married . He was a member of ABATE (A Brotherhood Aiming Towards Education), Spinal Cord Commission. Survivors include his wife of Yellville, AR; a daughter of Yellville, AR; a stepdaughter of Yellville, AR; his mother; and a brother, both of Ft. Dodge, Iowa; and seven grandchildren. His father preceded him in death. A memorial service will be handled by the family. Burial will be private. No visitation is scheduled. Mountaineer Echo Newspaper Week of December 11, 2003 issue: Linda AUSTIN of Yellville, Arkansas died Monday, December 1, 2003 at the Marion County Nursing Home in Yellville. She was 97 years old. Mrs. AUSTIN was born March 1, 1906 at Jackson County, Illinois to Carl and Marie "Mary" SASSENBERG BRUNWORTH. On November 21, 1925, she married Forrest M. AUSTIN. She was a housewife. Formerly of West Covina, California, Mrs. AUSTIN moved to Marion County in 1976. Survivors include her grandchildren, one of Plano, TX and one of Yellville, AR and great-grandchildren, both of Yellville, AR. Her parents; husband, Forrest; son, Whitney; daughter-in-law, Lois; three brothers and two sisters preceded her in death. Graveside services were held Wednesday, December 3, 2003 at Georges Creek Cemetery with Minister Bob JOHNSON officiating. No visitation was scheduled. Mountaineer Echo Newspaper Week of December 4, 2003 issue: Effie NOWLIN of Yellville, Arkansas died Tuesday, December 2, 2003 at Baxter Regional Medical Center, Mountain Home, Arkansas. She was 84 years old. Mrs. NOWLIN was born September 21, 1919 at Flippin, Arkansas to Mort Edward and Hanner K. OASTERMANN WAGGONER. On December 13, 1941, she married D.J. NOWLIN. She worked as a housekeeper for various families in the area including Crow-Barnes Resort in Bull Shoals. She was a lifetime resident of Marion County and a member of First Assembly of God Church in Yellville, Arkansas. Survivors include her son of Yellville, Arkansas; two daughters, one of Independence, Kansas and one of Yellville, Arkansas; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Her parents; husband, D.J. NOWLIN; son, David; two brothers and seven sisters preceded her in death. Visitation was held Wednesday, December 3, 2003 at Burns Funeral Home in Yellville. Funeral services are Thursday, December 4, 2003 at Yellville Assembly of God with Reverend James FOSTER officiating. Burial will be in Georges Creek Cemetery in Yellville, Arkansas with pallbearers. Mountaineer Echo Newspaper Week of December 11, 2003 issue: Dorothy M. PAUL, 76, of Bruno, Arkansas died Tuesday, December 2, 2003 at Mountain Home. An Eastern Star service preceded a memorial service on Saturday, December 6, 2003 at 10:00 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Yellville with Pastor Robert RICHTER officiating. Dorothy M. POUND was born Nay 16, 1927 in Valparaiso, Indiana to Claude and Viola WATTS POUND. Her career before retiring was working as a secretary for the I.B.E.W. Union. On February 27 1970, Dorothy married at Rialto, California and in 1977 she and her husband retired to Arkansas from Hammond, Indiana. She enjoyed the beauty of the Ozarks, attending Order of the Eastern Star meetings, and was an avid needle worker, who made many lovely, crocheted afghans, which she generously gifted to friends and family. Mrs. PAUL is survived by her husband of Bruno, AR; three stepsons, two of, Oregon; one of Houston, Texas; and one of Hershey, Pennsylvania; two stepdaughters, one of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania and one of Sheboygan, Wisconsin; and a host of grand and great grandchildren. Memorials are requested to the American Heart Association. Arrangements were by Twin Lakes Cremation Society and Funeral Home.

Mountaineer Echo Newspaper Week of December 4, 2003 issue: Floyd Tedford ANDERSON was born August 22, 1913 to John and Ida (SASSER) ANDERSON at the Anderson Flat. He was a farmer, rancher, retired from the Arkansas State Forestry Service and a member of the First Baptist Church in Yellville. He married Genevieve PYLE on June 10, 1939. They had two children. Mr. ANDERSON is survived by several loved ones, his daughter of Yellville; eight grandchildren (local) some of North Little Rock, some of Summit and some of Harrison; and 14 great-grandchildren (local), some of North Little Rock, some of Summit, some of Harrison. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews that he loved very much. Mr. ANDERSON is preceded in death by his wife Genevieve; son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Barbara ANDERSON; son-in-law, George WILSON; parents; and four brothers and four sisters. Pallbearers were his grandchildren and there were Honorary pallbearers. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of the Ozarks or Marion County Nursing Home Visitation was held on Friday, November 28, 2003 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Burns Funeral Home. Services were on Saturday, November 29, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. at Yellville First Baptist Church with Bro. Tim CYPERT Officiating. Burial was at the Layton Cemetery in Yellville.

FERGUSON, 88, was held at 11:00 am Tuesday, December 9, 2003 at Bull Shoals United Methodist Church with the Reverend Nicholas LASCARO officiating. Mrs. FERGUSON died Thursday, December 4, 2003 at Baxter Regional Medical Center. Mildred Emma FERGUSON was born December 13, 1914 at Morning Sun, Iowa the daughter of Fred and Ruth DOWELL RICHARDSON. She married the late Millard FERGUSON June 24, 1954 at Muscatine, Iowa. She was a secretary for a grain processing company for 29 years before moving to Bull Shoals from Muscatine in 1972. Mrs. FERGUSON was a member of the United Methodist Women, Friends of the Library, Fireman's Auxiliary of Bull Shoals and Family and Community Education. She is survived by two sons, one of Muscatine, Iowa and one of Overland Park, Kansas; 7 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and two brothers, James and Fred RICHARDSON. Entombment was in Kirby's Tucker Memorial Mausoleum. Eva Jean QUALLS HELMS was born April 7, 1940 at Carlinville, Illinois the daughter of Elwin David and Helen GAABO BROWN. She had been a secretary for a trailer company before moving to Bull Shoals in November 1988 from Virden, Illinois. Mrs. HELMS was a member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles Auxiliary and a Baptist. She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Loretta. She is survived by her husband of Bull Shoals, AR; one son of Midway, Arkansas; one daughter of Midway, Arkansas; four grandchildren; one brother of Cheyenne, Wyoming; and two sisters, one of Brighton, Michigan and one of North Carolina. He was 94 years old. Mr. YOUNG was born July 27, 1909 at Dodd City (Marion County), Arkansas to Pace YOUNG and Dottie OWENS YOUNG. On March 29, 1941, he married Pauline MALLARD. Mr. YOUNG was a member of the Northside Church of Christ, a 50 year Mason, lumberman and Postmaster. He was an avid reader. Survivors include his sons and daughters-in-law, one of Irving, TX and one of Harrison, AR; and a son of Springfield, MO; daughter and son-in-law of Rogers, AR; and three grandchildren. His parents; wife, Pauline M. YOUNG; two sisters, Helen BISHOP and Irene HARRISON; and two brothers, Philip YOUNG and Shelby YOUNG, preceded him in death. Mountaineer Echo Newspaper Week of December 18, 2003 issue: Dr. Alfred William Louis WEITKAMP, 94, of Mountain Home, Arkansas, formerly of Lakeview, Arkansas, passed away Thursday, December 11, 2003 at Baxter Regional Medical Center. A private memorial service was held Sunday, December 14, 2003 at the Chemistry Department at Arkansas State University in Mountain Home and was attend by family and close friends. Dr. WEITKAMP was born November 15, 1909 to William Henry and Martha Katrina BLOME WEITKAMP at Fontanelle, Nebraska. On September 1, 1935, he was married at York, Nebraska. Dr. WEITKAMP was a Research Chemist in the petroleum industry and had a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from the University of Nebraska and also received an Honorary Doctor of Science from Midland College in Nebraska. In 1970, Dr. and Mrs. WEITKAMP retired to Lakeview, Arkansas where they lived until recently when they moved to Mountain Home. Dr. WEITKAMP was an active Republican and wrote many letters to the editor on political issues as well as letters on the importance of higher education in the Mountain Home area. Dr. WEITKAMP supported the establishment of ASUMH not only in word but also in deed by his generous gift to the university to establish a chemistry department and lab. His wish was that memorials be give to ASUMH in his memory. Dr. WEITKAMP was also an avid gardener and created a beautiful garden of flowers and fruit trees on a lot near their home. He was a long term and active member of the local Rockhound group. Dr. Weitkamp is survived by his wife of Mountain Home, AR; a son and his wife of Rush, NY; a daughter and her husband of Boalsburg, PA; a grandson of Milwaukee, WI; a granddaughter and her husband of Bristol, England; great-grandchildren tow of Bristol, England; a sister of Los Angeles, CA; and a brother of Seattle, WA. His brother, Alvin WEITKAMP, preceded him in death. Arrangements were under the direction of Twin Lakes Cremation Society and Funeral Home (870) 445-4257.

Mountaineer Echo Newspaper Week of December 18, 2003 issue: Hazel Joan FARREN of the Pine Mountain Community in Yellville, Arkansas died Saturday, December 13, 2003 at her home. She was 61. Mrs. FARREN was born March 28, 1942 at Ft. Monroe, Virginia to William Floyd and Ollie Irene JOHNSON YOUNG. On September 29, 1973, she married Scott FARREN. Mrs. FARREN was employed as a Teacher's Aide and school bus driver for the Flippin School District. She was a member of the Welcome Ridge Community Church, Pine Mountain Fire Department Auxiliary and former member of the Pine Mountain Volunteer Fire Department. Formerly of Painesville, Ohio, she had been a resident of Marion County for the past 24 years. Survivors include her son of Houston, TX; daughters, one of Minot, ND and one of Harrison, AR; 13 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Her husband, Scott FARREN, preceded her in death. Visitation was held Monday, December 15, 2003 from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Burns Funeral Home. Funeral services were held Tuesday, December 16, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. at Burns Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Kevin ROGERS officiating. She was born March 31, 1911 in Peel, AR, a daughter of Jake and Alice RISLEY YOCHAM. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Emanuel BOWSHIER; sisters, Zula SMITH and Versal KING; and brothers, Everett YOCHAM and Joe Park YOCHAM, Survivors are her sister of Peel, AR; a niece and her husband of Harrison, AR; a nephew and his wife of Harrison, AR; and many other nieces and nephews. He was 78 years old. Mr. ELLIOTT was born November 6, 1925 at Richmond, Indiana to Frank Roy and Lorena BALES ELLIOTT. On August 9, 1952, he was married. He was a self-employed lawyer and a Naval veteran of World War II. Mr. ELLIOTT resided in Marion County since 1972 moving from Wayne, Illinois. He was a Lutheran by faith. He was the Past Commander of the American Legion and a member of the North Arkansas Bluegrass Association and former Indiana State Legislature Lobbyist. Survivors include his wife of Yellville, AR; a daughter of Little Rock, AR; two grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was 89 years old. Mr. MELTON was born October 26, 1914 at Yellville, Arkansas to Henry Frank and Minnie Ola CALLAHAN MELTON. On October 18, 1942 he got married. He was employed as the manager of the Ozark Milk Products Company, which is now known as Meyenberg Milk Products. He served in the United States Army during World War II. He was a member of the Pleasant Ridge Methodist Church in Yellville, Marion County Farm Bureau and the American Legion Post #61. Survivors include his wife of Yellville, AR; sons and daughters-in-law one of Jenks, OK and one of Harrison, AR; five grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. His parents, three brothers and four sisters preceded him in death. Funeral services were held Monday, December 22, 2003 at 10:00 a.m. at the Pleasant Ridge Methodist Church in Yellville with Reverend Ron ROBBINS officiating. Burial followed in the Pleasant Ridge Cemetery in Yellville with pallbearers and Honorary pallbearers . Mountaineer Echo Newspaper Week of December 25, 2003 issue: Robert ARMSTRONG (Old Man River) of Yellville, Arkansas and formerly of Harrison, Arkansas died Wednesday, December 17, 2003 at Baxter Regional Medical Center in Mountain Home, Arkansas. He was 93 years old. Mr. ARMSTRONG was born December 17, 1910 at Texarkana, Arkansas to Marcus B. and Estell WHITLOCK ARMSTRONG. On August 16, 1956, he was married in Romeo, Michigan. He retired from the Merchant Marines after 40 years of service and served the U.S. Troops during World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War. He was an avid outdoorsman, who loved hunting and fishing. During the 1980's, he fished the White River catching numerous lunker German Brown trout, which earned him the nickname, "Old Man River." He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Yellville. Before his death, he was a resident of the Marion County Nursing Home. Survivors include his wife of Yellville, AR; one daughter and husband of Flippin, AR and another daughter and husband Greenville, SC; and three grandchildren, one of Flippin, AR and two of Greenville, SC. His parents, three brothers and two sisters preceded him in death. A memorial service was held Saturday, December 20, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. at Burns Funeral Home in Yellville with Dr. Fred Taylor. No visitation is scheduled. Burial was in the Armstrong Family plot in Maplewood Cemetery in Harrison, AR. Mountaineer Echo Newspaper Week of December 25, 2003 issue: Gerald Bernard HAIDYS, age 48, of Bruno, Arkansas was found dead on Wednesday, December 17, at his residence. According to Marion County Sheriff Carl MCBEE said, "My office received a 911 call for help for help at 2:46 p.m. from a female at a residence on Highway 235 in the Bruno community of Marion County." MCBEE added that upon the arrival of law enforcement officials and medical personnel, HAIDYS was found dead in the backyard of the residence from an apparent, self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Officers at the scene found a .38 revolver laying next to HAIDYS' body. MCBEE added that the body was sent to the Arkansas State Medical Examiner's Office in Little Rock on Thursday, December 18 where an autopsy will be performed. The incident is being handled by the Marion County Coroner's Office as a suicide and no foul play is suspected.

Mountaineer Echo Newspaper Week of January 8, 2004 issue: Rosie Griffith WHISNER of Springfield, Missouri died December 23, 2003 at St. John's Hospital in Springfield, Missouri and started her family reunion with her Lord and family. Reunion is being held in Heaven and will last forever. Service in Cotter, Arkansas was conducted by her grandson. Mrs. WHISNER was a member of the Cherry Street Baptist Church in Springfield. Surviving are her husband of Springfield, MO; a daughter and son-in-law of Springfield, MO; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great great-grandchildren. Three daughters, Mary Lou GRIFFITH, Lavon FERRARA and Betty SHIPMAN and two sons, Henry Lee GRIFFITH and Alfred Eugene GRIFFITH, preceded her in death. She was a member of the Yellville First Baptist Church and the Eastern Star. Survivors include her husband of Yellville, AR; sons, one of Brandon, MS and one of Yellville, AR; a daughter of Yellville, AR; brothers one of Pearl, MS, one of Johnsonville, SC, one of Senatobia, MS and one of Waldron, AR; sisters, one of Florence, MS, one of Brandon, MS, one of Florence, MS and one of Texas; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Her parents and brother, Roger JENNINGS, preceded her in death. Visitation was held Sunday, December 28, 2003 from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Burns Funeral Home. Funeral services were held Monday, December 29, 2003 at 10:00 a.m. at Burns Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Tim CYPERT officiating. Mountaineer Echo Newspaper Week of January 1, 2004 issue: Carolyn Rose PANNELL MITCHELL, 62, died Thursday, December 25, 2003 at her home in Paragould, Arkansas. She was born in Eros, Marion County, Arkansas on January 25, 1941 the daughter of Doy M. and Vera Rose PANNELL. She was a graduate of Leachville High School and attended Arkansas State University where she was a member of Phi Mu Fraternity. She was co-owner of Pannell Ford Mercury in Paragould, taught at Oak Grove Elementary and was a member of First Baptist Church in Paragould. She is survived by her husband of the home; son and daughter-in-law, of Paragould; daughter and son-in-law of Little Rock; and six grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Doy M. and Vera Rose PANNELL, and her sister, Kay ROGERS. Funeral services were held at 3:00 P.M. Sunday, December 28, 2003 at First Baptist Church in Paragould with Reverend Scott NEATHERY and Dr. Charles F. DEVANE officiating with interment immediately following at Greene County Memorial Gardens with pallbearers. She was 87 years old. Mrs. MOORE was born October 13, 1916 at Bruno, Arkansas to John BOYD and Mary Elizabeth MOREAU MILLIGAN. On May 30, 1941, she married Donald Ray MOORE. She was a homemaker. Mrs. MOORE attended the Flippin Church of Christ and was a former member of the OES (Order on the Eastern Star). Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law of Moxee City, WA; a daughter and son-in-law of Harrison, AR; a brother of Yellville, AR; four granddaughters one of New Providence, Iowa, one of Seattle, WA, one of Kamloops, British Columbia, Canada and one of Kirkwood, WA; eight great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Her parents; husband, Donald Ray MOORE; and four brothers, Howard, Hobert, Dolph and Sherman preceded her in death. Visitation will be held Thursday, January 1, 2004 from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Burns Funeral Home in Yellville, AR. Mr. CUNNINGHAM was a farmer and lifetime resident of Marion County, Arkansas. He was a former Pyatt School Board member and Marion County School Board member. He was saved at a young age at the Old Pyatt Community Building. Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law of Yellville, AR; brothers one of Yakima, WA and one of Surprise, AZ; a sister of Bergman, AR; two grandchildren one of Benton, AR and one of Conway, AR. His parents, Oral and Idella CUNNINGHAM; wife, Sue CUNNINGS; and two sisters, Kathryn WHITNEY and Hazel STANLEY, preceded him in death. Funeral services will be Friday, January 2, 2004 at 2:30 p.m. at the Yellville First Baptist Church with Reverend Clayton CUNNINGHAM officiating.
