BARNES, FINCH, SMITH posted by Mountaineer Echo Newspaper on Saturday, April 16, 2005

Mountaineer Echo Newspaper Week of April 21, 2005 issue: Joseph W. BARNES (Papa Joe) of Yellville, Arkansas died Sunday, April 16, 2005. He was 86 years old. He was born March 16, 1919 at Newark, Arkansas to Joseph George BARNES and Rena FINCH BARNES. He was the 2nd of 5 boy, 3 of whom have preceded him in death. Mr. BARNES first came to Marion County to work in the Civilian Conservation Corps Camp at Buffalo Point. After his service in the CCC was completed, he continued to reside in Marion County for the remainder of his life. He married Mary Willodean SMITH on April 7, 1941 whom he met while working in the CCC. A little over 2 months after they were married, he was drafted to serve in World War II. He was a member of the 11th Infantry, 3rd Army. He served in the Army for four years and one month. His 25-month tour of service in the European Theater included Iceland, Normandy, Northern France and Germany. He mentioned that the reason we won the war is that we had men who knew what it was like to be hungry and cold and keep going. He remembered that he once had to go 90 days in combat without being able to change clothes. He recalled when General George Patton arrived in a small plane to address the Third Army. He told them that the Third Army had been 'selected" to take Berlin and that they were going to get the job done as quickly as possible. He recalled the positive impact that General Patton had on the men of the Third Army and the "colorful" language that he used. Mr. BARNES was awarded a Purple Heart, a Bronze Star, the American Defense Service Medal and the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal. He was wounded twice during his time in combat. After being wounded the second time, he was sent back to the United States where he spent several months in the hospital recovering from a leg wound. After he was healed, he returned to Marion County where he and his wife continued their life together, which had been abruptly interrupted by the war. His oldest daughter had been born while he was in the service. They had four daughters. He built a grocery store at the fork of Highways 14 and 268, which is the entry into the Buffalo Point National Park. His wife, Willodean, ran the store and Joe ventured into another business for himself. He bought the Buffalo River fishing resort and ran that business until he retired and sold the business. Prior to owning the fishing resort and the store, he had traveled across the country as a construction superintendent overseeing the building of locks and dams. He built the campground where Highway 14 crosses the Buffalo River. He built the business that he purchased from 15 jon boats to 6 leaky canoes into the largest canoe rental on the Buffalo River. At one time he had over 160 canoes in operation. However, after the long and futile feud with the Nation Park Service (the park had changed from Buffalo River State Park to Buffalo Point National Park, he was issued 120 canoe permits and moved his business from the Highway 14 bridge to across the highway from the grocery store that he had built and renamed the Business Barnes Canoe Rental (know known as Wild Bill Outfitters). In addition to canoe and cabin rentals, he provided a guided fishing service that developed a reputation as the finest in the area. His understanding of the River, which could rise violently and dramatically in a short period of time during the rainy season, enabled many campers and canoeists to avoid dangerous situations. On one occasion when the river was on one of its notorious rises, he was responsible for the dramatic rescue of a woman whose legs were trapped under the seat of an overturned canoe. The river was rising rapidly and in a short time the woman would be under water. The rangers of the National Park Service who had been informed about the crisis came to the bridge and told Joe that they were going to Yellville and find a rescue team to help the woman. Joe told the Park Rangers "boys there ain't no help in Yellville, you might as well hightail it back up the river and help that woman or she might drown. Afer motoring up the river for some distance, he and two other men, after realizing that they could not free the canoe, and breaking a hack saw blade trying to saw the seat supports, managed to pull the canoe seat out with brute force, free the woman and take her to safety in their jon boat. Mike Mills, owner and operator of BOC a similar business on the Buffalo River in Ponca, Arkansas stated, "Joe BARNES was my mentor." Mr. BARNES was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Willodean, three brothers, Jerel, James and Kenneth. Survivors include his four daughters, a brother and ten grandchildren; and twelve great grandchildren. Funeral services will be at the Upper Pavilion at Buffalo Point Nation Park on Thursday, April 21 at 11:00 a.m. with Amos Davenport and Junior Shipman officiating. He was a member of the Mull Church of Christ. He loved us dearly and we loved him dearly. In Lieu of Flowers: Please make donations to DeSoto Cemetery, c/o David Sewell, 194 MC 6087, Yellville, AR 72687. Arrangements are under the direction of Burns Funeral Home in Yellville, Arkansas (870) 449-6621.
