Washington County was created in 1828 from Crawford and Lovely Counties. Parts of Washington County became Benton and Madison Counties in 1836. Fayetteville is the county seat.

The Washington County Archives are located in the old courthouse on business 71 south.Fayetteville Public Library
The Fayetteville Library is just west of the courthouse several blocks. They have all of their obituaries indexed on computer, but most are from the Northwest Arkansas Times.
