ADAMS, BAXTER, COPELAND, LANCASTER, MILUM, SCHMERIER, SCHMIRER, SOUTHARDS, STAUFFACHER posted by Mt Echo Newspaper on Saturday, March 11, 2000

March 30, 2000 issue of the Mt. Echo Newspaper: David MILUM, 44, of Yakima, Wash., died March 11. He was born Nov 25, 1955, at Harrison, the sone of Roland and Betty (LANcASTER) MILUM. He married Joyce SCHMIRER in Seattle in 1976. Mr. MILUM worked in the camera and sporting goods department of Payless Drug Store for 17 years before retiring due to health problems. He enjoyed fishing, working on the computer with his son Aaron and collecting comic books. He enjoyed the sport of bowling in his younger years, earning the title of State Champion. Mr. MILUM was very active in his church, West Valley Missionary, where he served as deacon as well as being a past member of the board of directors. Survivors include his wife, Joyce, and son, Aaron; his father and wife, Roland and Bonnie MILUM of Yakima; his mother Betty SOUTHARDS of Yakima; two brothers, Mike SOUTHARDS and his wife Dawn of Tacoma and Danny SOUTHARDS and his wife Betty of Yakima; a sister, Melissa (MILUM) BAXTER and her husband Brice of Yakima; his grandfather, Frank D. MILUM of Yakima; aunts and uncles Milo and Faye MILUM of Yakima, Carol and Jim STAUFFACHER of Austin, Texas; cousins Mike and Jill STAUFFACHER and James and John MILUM; and nephews Kaleb, Joshua, Tyler and Seth BAXTER. Funeral services were held Mar 17 at West Valley Missionary Church, with burial at Terrace Heights Memorial Park. Yakima Valley (Wash) News column by Frankie Seay, Mar 30, 2000 issue The Mt Echo: Our Arkansas community in Yakima and surrounding areas has been saddened the last few days by the deaths of two of our beloved friends and relatives - both passed away March 11. My hear aches for all of us so much that I an hardly write abut it, but I must, so friends around the country can grieve too and it seems to help to know we have their love. Our other death is close to home for me ... one our family has expected for 44 years, but we had begun to think (and hope) we would outlive all of us and we wonder why we're in so much shock, but we are, and so terribly saddened. David Milo MILUM was born Nov 25, 1955, at the Harrison hospital to Roland and Betty (LANCASTER) MILUM and passed away March 11 in an airplane near Denver, Colo., with a heart attack, surrounded by his family - his mother, Betty SOUTHARDS, his wife Joyce, his son Aaron and Joyce's mother. The family had been to Florida for a week's vacation and on the way home, between Houston and Seattle, David just quietly went to sleep. Two doctors who were on the plane took over, but couldn't save him and the plan made an emergency landing in Denver, where they were met by ambulance and police escort and taken to a hospital, but David was beyond help. After a while at the hospital, the family flew to Seattle and home to Yakima. David was flown home for the services. David came to Yakima in 1957 as a 2-year-old when his parents, along with both sets of grandparents, Frank and Dessie (COPELAND) MILUM and Henry and Delia (ADAMS) LANCASTER, made the move from Arkansas. He went to school in the Yakiam school system, Hoover Elementary and Davis High, worked at Payless Drug Store for about 16 years, married Joyce SCHMERIER in 1976 and in 1986 their son Aaron was born and is a carbon copy of David; red hair, smiles, jokes and all. David was born with a congenital heart condition, but he never used it as a crutch. Lots of times over the years he didn't have the strength to walk and never to run or play sports, but he dearly loved to fish even when he didn't have the strength in his hands to hold the fishing pole. He always had a chuckle and a sparkle in his eye and many times he would be in the hospital critically ill and the rest of us would be there day and night, just knowing he wouldn't make it, but somehow he always did, and was always able to joke and laugh. This time he knew he was getting worse, but wanted to make one last trip and he thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it, did the sightseeing in his wheelchair, rode the roller coaster with Aaron and the last night they were there he and Joyce sat on the beach and watched dolphins outside their condo. So David lived his life to the fullest, as far as he was able, loved every minute of it, loved his family and his church, where he has been a deacon for years, collected rare comic books for years and loved their little dog, "Franny". In return David was loved by everyone who knew him and since he got his computer a couple of years ago, he has made a lot of friends there, too. He has lots of people who will always miss him, but we had him longer than we thought we would, so we have to be satisfied with that and we'll always have him in our hearts. His mother, Betty SOUTHARDS, is my first cousin and was with me last fall at Turkey Tot, so many of you got to meet her.

ADAMS, BURROW posted by Mt Echo Newspaper on Monday, March 13, 2000

Yakima Valley (Wash) News column by Frankie Seay, Mar 30, 2000 issue The Mt Echo: I was sorry to hear of the death of Peola "Ola" BURROW, such a nice lady and from such a nice family, who I've known or known of all my life. My mother and aunts, Retta, Delia and Effie ADAMS, were raised around Greasy Creek, Bruno-Freck, where Ola and her family lived and she was younger than them, but her sisters, Eff and Att, would take Ola along when they went to church, singings or whatever was going on in the neighborhood. The girls nikname for her was "Pills", but htey didn't mind taking her because she was such a pretty girl and they all loved her. Years later when she and Floyd had the little store in Freck, she was still pretty nd friendly and always laughing. I think I've heard about her hiding from the Watkins man and he just sat on the porch and waited for her to get tired of hiding and come out. (Does anyone remember who the Watkins man was in that area in the 1930s?) Ola was a wonderful person; my sympathy to her family.

CRAIG, SANDITEN, WILKES posted by Mt Echo Newspaper on Sunday, March 19, 2000

Mt. Echo Newspaper, Mar 23, 2000 issue (front page): Flippin man dies in two-vehicle accident: A 35-year-old Flippin resident, David G. WILKES, was killed in a two-vehicle accident Sunday afternoon, March 19, on Hwy. 412 about five miles west of Huntsville in Madison County. The accident also claimed the life of an Oklahoma man and injured three people, including WILKES' wife and son. According to an Associated Press report, the vehicle in which WILKES was riding crossed the center line on a curve and struck an oncoming pickup truck head-on. A passenger in the truck, 46-year-old Scott A. SANDITEN of Tulsa, OK also died. The injured were identified as Donald Ray CRAIG, 49, of Tulsa, the driver of the pick-up; Glenna Jo WILKES, 33 of Flippin; and 10-year-old K. WILKES. Front page of the Mt. Echo April 6, 2000: Erroneous informtion regarding wreck in which Flippin man died: by Ray Dean Davis, Editor: Information the Echo obtained concerning a March 19 two-vehicle accident that killed a Flippin man near Huntsville was apparently wrong. An Associated Press story reported at the time that the eastbound Toyota 4 Runner in which David WILKES, 35, of Flippin was riding crossed the center of Hwy 412 and struck another vehicle. Subsequent information indicates that it was actually the other vehicle, a westbound pickup driven by Donald CRAIG, 49, of Tulsa, which crossed the yellow line at a curve on a hill and struck the Wilkes vehicle. Scott A SANDITEN, 46, of Tulsa, a passenger in the pickup, was also killed. The WILKES vehicle was being driven by Glenna WILKES, 33. In addition to her husband David, their son, Kail WILKES, 10, was a passenger in the Toyota. Both Glenna and Kail were injured and taken to Washington Regional Hospital in Fayeteville. Mrs. WILKES substained a broken collarbone, while Kail was admitted in critical condition from internal injuries he apparanty received when the impact caused him to strain against his seatbelt. A family spokesperson told the Echo Tuesday that both Glenna and Kail are doing better and following surgery and rest, Kail returned to school this week. We regret having initially published erroneous information. (Transcribed by Linda Haas Davenport)
