BODENHAMER, HOLLINGSWORTH, RIFE posted by Mountaineer Echo Newspaper on Sunday, October 6, 2002

Mountaineer Echo Newspaper Week of October 10, 2002 issue: The body of Elizabeth A. RIFE, 15 of Gainesville, Missouri was found at approximately 1:15 p.m. Sunday, October 6 at the Cotter Bluffs overlooking the White River. She was identified by photograph given to the Baxter County Sheriff's Office when she was reported missing on Saturday afternoon. According to a friend, he stated that she was at a gathering with other juveniles on the Cotter Bluffs overlooking White River late Friday night. A friend had walked back to a bonfire and then came back to the bluff area, but was unable to find her. He left and came back with flashlights and looked in the area for about 4-5 hours. At approximately 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, the victim's mother filed a missing persons report. Helicopter and other personnel looked the area over with the aid of the friend. The search ended because the friend thought that she might have received a ride with another person. Deputies also checked at a residence in Midway where she knew some people, but no one was home. At 9:00 a.m. on Sunday morning another search was organized with the Baxter County Reserve Deputies, Mounted Patrol, Helicopter, Arkansas Forestry Officers and the K-9 tracking team from ADC, North Central Unit. The missing juvenile was also entered into the Nation Center for Missing and Exploited Children Network system located at the Sheriff's Office. Baxter County Judge Joe BODENHAMER was also contacted and aided in getting the 224th Nation Guard Unit in Mountain Home activated to conduct a massive walking search party. RIFE was found at the bottom of the bluff approximately 250 feet down by the North Central Arkansas ADC tracking team. Members of the Gassville Fire Department aided in her recovery. Arkansas State Police Investigator Mark HOLLINGSWORTH and personnel from the National Park Service were scheduled to repel down the face of the Bluff on Monday to record and get the exact measurement of the fall. The victim was sent to the Arkansas State Crime Lab. The incident is under investigation. No foul play is suspected at this time.

MALLETT posted by Mountaineer Echo Newspaper on Tuesday, October 8, 2002

Mountaineer Echo Newspaper Week of October 10, 2002 issue: A small single engine plane slammed into a bluff across the White River from Stetson's Resort in the Fairview community at approximately 7 p.m. Tuesday night killing all three occupants of the aircraft. A witness fishing along the riverbank on the Marion County side told Marion County Sheriff's Deputies that he had seen the plane flying around and it flew into the mountainside and burst into flames. There was apparently no indication that the aircraft was in trouble prior to the crash. Another witness from Baxter County, Arlynd MALLETT, spotted the plane flying downstream along the river. MALLETT reported to the Arkansas State Police that the plane appeared to be flying low. The aircraft then struck the bluff and burst into flames. An Arkansas State Police report stated that the plane left the Gaston's Resort airstrip. Since the accident was called in from Stetson's and there was some confusion as to where the actual crash occurred, the Fairview Volunteer Fire department was paged to the resort along with Marion County Sheriff's Department and the Arkansas State Police. Baxter County paged out the Cotter and Gassville VFD along with the Midway VFD to search the Baxter County side for the accident site along with the Baxter County Sheriff's Office and the ASP. The impact zone was approximately a 275-yard climb above Denton Ferry Road against the bluffs in Baxter County. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed that an aircraft was missing in the area and that three people were aboard the craft. The fire and rescue teams from Baxter County confirmed three bodies in the burning wreckage at 7:42. Emergency radio reports stated that only about 15 feet of the tail section and a wing were left intact from the crash. The identities of the people on board the aircraft were not released by press-time. The originating point of the flight and the final destination of the plane are unknown at this time. The FAA requested that the Baxter County Sheriff's Office seal off the site to all but emergency personnel and to treat the incident as a crime scene until they could get personnel onsite. The FAA was expected to have investigators from Dallas on scene Wednesday. The burning wreckage set trees in the immediate area on fire and the fire was readily visible from the Marion County side of the river. Fire personnel had to work at extinguishing the blaze by hiking to the scene with backpacks and extinguishers brought in from the top of the mountain from the Denton Ferry Road staging area. Yellville's AirEvac helicopter assisted at the scene with searchlights and was joined by the BCSO helicopter to assist the fire and rescue personnel. Marion County Deputies assisted in the investigation by obtaining witness statements from residents and guests on the Marion County side of the river.
