The Mountaineer Echo August 8, 2002 issue: Reverend J.R. Adams, 88, of Springdale, Arkansas died August 1, 2002 at the Brighton Home Care Center In Rogers, Arkansas. He was born July 29, 1914, the second born son of Nellie and John Quincy Adams of Pyatt, Arkansas. He was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma, with whom he had been married more than 60 years. He graduated from Springfield, Missouri, Assembly of God College and pastored churches in both California and Arkansas for over 50 years. Survivors include two sons, Wendell and Carl Adams of Springdale, AR; four daughters, Connie Adams, of Little Rock, AR, Mavis Fielding of Dallas, TX, Glenda Noble of Hot Springs, AR and Carolyn Butler of Martinsburg, WV; two brothers, Paul Adams of Yellville, AR and Vancil Adams of Yakima, WA; sixteen grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. Visitation was held Monday, August 5, 2002 from 2:00 until 8:00 p.m. with the family present from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Beard's Funeral Home Chapel in Fayetteville, AR. Funeral services were held Tuesday, August 6, 2002 at 1:30 p.m. at the First Assembly of God Church in Springdale, AR. Burial followed in the Friendship Cemetery in Springdale. Arrangements were under the direction of Beard's Funeral Chapel and Crematory, Inc. in Fayetteville, AR.

Mountaineer Echo Newspaper Week of August 15, 2002 issue: Major William Henry JONES, 81 of Fairfiled and formerly of Yellville, Arkansas, passed away at The Birchwood Care Center on Friday, August 2, 2002 at 3:45 a.m. He was born in Baltimore, Maryland on October 1, 1920 the son of William and Raymonde BRISSEAU JONES. He was a veteran of WWII and a career officer with the United States Air Force from 1943 to 1964. He retired from the Strategic Air Command Headquarters, Omaha, Nebraska. William was a graduate of the University of Nebraska at Omaha and was employed as a high school teacher in Minneapolis, Minnesota. On January 8, 1944, in California, he married Phyllis Viola GARR. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Viola JONES of Fairfield; son Terry JONES and his wife Cheri ERDMAN of Downers Grove, Illinois; two daughters, Candy HOLLAND and her husband Al of Sacramento, California and Moya JONES of Fairfield; and four grandchildren, Fawn, Perry, Alison, and Gillian. He was preceded in death by his parents. A private memorial service was held at the convenience of the family with Brown Dawson Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Mountaineer Echo Newspaper Week of August 8, 2002 issue: Raymond PRANKE of Dodd City, Arkansas died Saturday, August 3, 2002 at his residence in Dodd City. He was 80. Mr. PRANKE was born August 31, 1921 in Chicago, Illinois to Joseph and Lucy POLASIC PRANKE. He was married to the late June HEADSTROM. He had been a resident of Marion County for the past 21 years after retiring as a supervisor with Lucent Technologies. Mr. PRANKE was a Baptist by faith. He is survived by one son John PRANKE of Chicago; two daughters, Laura CSOLKOVITS of Orchard Lake, Michigan and Carolyn PRANKE of Chicago; one brother George PRANKE of Summit, Arkansas and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife June and a brother. No local visitation is scheduled. Graveside services will be held at Mount Emblem Cemetery in Elm Hurst, Illinois with burial to follow. Mountaineer Echo Newspaper Week of August 8, 2002 issue: The body of Paul B. SANDREN, 59, of Cabool, Missouri was recovered at 9:55 a.m. on Sunday, August 4, 2002 in Bull Shoals Lake. The body was found floating on the surface of the lake in approximately 58 feet of water in the cove near Point #12, which was the general area of the search. The search began last Sunday, July 28 after SANDREN, who was swimming and boating with family at Hollingsworth Cove, disappeared. When SANDREN did not surface, family members left the area to notify authorities. Local law enforcement officials immediately began recovery efforts. After divers and cameras were discontinued on Wednesday, July 31, Arkansas Game and Fish Wildlife Officers and Rangers from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers maintained continuous surface patrols of the cove where the drowning occurred. Mr. SANDREN'S body has been sent to the Arkansas Crime Laboratory Medical Examiner's Office for autopsy. No foul play is suspected. Assisting with the search and recovery efforts were member of the Marion and Baxter County Sheriff's Department, Missouri Water Patrol, US Army Corps of Engineers, Arkansas Games and Fish Commission, and divers and staff from Bull Shoals Lake Boat Dock. Cadaver dogs from the Jefferson county Sheriff's Department in Pine Bluff also assisted in the search.

The Mountaineer Echo August 8, 2002 issue: Carol J. Whala of Flippin, Arkansas died Monday, August 5, 2002 at the Twin Lakes Nursing Center in Flippin. She was 75. Mrs. Whala was born October 11, 1926 in McGill, Nevada to Earl Dean and Hazel Ireta Jones Smith. In October of 1963, she married Richard Whala in Carson City, Nevada. She was a homemaker. Formerly of Modesto, California, Mrs. Whala had been a resident of Flippin since 1996. She was a Protestant by faith. Survivors include her sons, James Barnes and wife Ann of Henderson, AR, Michael Owens of Salida, CA, John Whala of Chouehilla, CA, Larry Barnes and wife Natie of San Diego, CA and Benjamin Horn of Oklahoma; daughters, Judy Bill of Flippin, AR, Patsy Whala of Richmond, CA, Jeanie Pringle of Fresno, CA and Cindy Barnes of Fresno, CA; fourteen grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; one great great-granddaughter; and brother, Ronnie Smith and wife Jean of Diamond Bar, CA. She was preceded in death by her parents, one son and one stepson. Visitation will be Thursday, August 8, 2002 from 9:00 a.m. until time of service at Kirby-Boaz Funeral Home. Mildred Lucille POUNDSTONE died August 5, 2002 at Corpus Christi, Texas. She was born July 30, 1908 in Macon County, Illinois to Issac L. and Myrtle L. POUNDS WEAKLEY. She married Judson POUNDSTONE on July 14, 1928 at Cerro Gorda, Illinois, and was a homemaker. She was a resident of Corpus Christi, Texas since moving from Bull Shoals, AR in 1996. She moved to Bull Shoals, AR in 1971 from Decatur, IL. She was a member of Quilters, Ladies Circle and the Marion County Home Extension. In 1946 she was awarded a commendation from the United States War Department for her service in the WWII Atomic Bomb Project. She was a member of the Bull Shoals United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband-Judson POUNDSTONE, four brothers, four sisters, and one great-grandchild, Kristin Leigh CANNON. She was 90. Mrs. HAASE was born December 26, 1911 at the Cowan Barrens Community of Marion County, Arkansas to John and Ida Mae BAKER CLEVELAND. Mrs. HAASE was a retired waitress. She was a lifetime resident of Marion County, Member of First Assembly of God Church in Yellville. She enjoyed listening to music at Martin's Bakery. The Mountaineer Echo August 8, 2002 issue: Lloyd Lee Forbus of Bull Shoals, Arkansas died Saturday, August 3, 2002 at Baxter Regional Medical in Mountain Home, Arkansas. He was 76. Mr. Forbus was born March 8, 1926at Lone Wolfe, Oklahoma to Earl and Zilla Hawkins Forbus. On November 21, 1954, he married Aleta Palmer. Mr. Forbus was the owner of Lloyd's Heat and Air. Formerly of Tulsa, Oklahoma, he had been a resident of Bull Shoal since 1959. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army, Airborne (Infantry) Division. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Flippin, AR. Survivors include his wife, Aleta Forbus of Bull Shoals, AR; son, Dale Forbus and wife Tammy of Bull Shoals, AR; daughter, Paula Flippin and husband Dale of Fredonia, PA; grandsons, Justin and Jared Forbus; and granddaughters, Stephanie Flippin, of PA and Joey Forbus of Earle, AR. The Mountaineer Echo August 15, 2002 issue: Ray Robison of Yellville, Arkansas died Monday, August 12, 2002 at the Marion County Nursing Home in Yellville. He was 86. Mr. Robison was born April 12, 1916 at Water Creek (Maumee), Arkansas to Mr. and Mrs. E.M. and Lillie Williams Robison. He was the second oldest of ten siblings, seven boys and three girls. He loved working with his hands and his favorite subject in school was wood shop. Mr. Robison went to work in timber for the State for 22 years. He also helped build the Caney Rock House, which is a landmark for the community. What Mr. Robison is probably most well known for is his beautiful singing voice. He traveled with a quartet for many years and they sang throughout the region. Mr. Robison was most of proud of his marriage to Retha on December 24, 1938, which resulted in two wonderful daughters. You could find him every Friday at 11:00 a.m. by the piano lending his gorgeous voice to the Gospel songfest. Mr. Robison was employed as an inspector for the State of Arkansas. He was selected as the "Resident of the Month" by the Marion County Nursing Home in 1996. He was a member of the Main Street Church of Christ. Survivors include his daughters, Carolyn Avey of Yellville, AR and Mary Jane Walker and husband Larry of Yellville, AR; brothers, Noah and wife Opal of Harrison, AR, Clarence and wife Marion of Yellville, AR and Charles and wife Carolyn of Yellville; sisters, Edna Williamson of Salinas, CA, Mary Branch of Yellville, AR and Katherine Ezell and husband Johnny of St. Joe, AR; four grandchildren, Chad, Paula, Matt and Amy; and five great-grandchildren, Ashley, Tayler, Tanner, Tyler and Nicholas. He was born March 17, 1928 at Bruno, Arkansas to Arthur and Geneva PYLE SASSER. On April 16, 1948 he married Ruth PHILLIPS at Yellville. He was a retired mechanic for Bruno-Pyatt School. Mr. SASSER was a lifelong resident of Marion County. He was a member of Bruno Baptist Church. He served as a basketball official for 33 years. He was a lifetime member of the Arkansas Activities Association and member of the Bruno Hunting Club. He is survived by his wife, Ruth SASSER of Yellville, AR; son, Arthur Ray SASSER and wife Elaine of Yellville, AR; daughters, Phyllis BOWMAN of Yellville, AR, Betty Sue LOWERY of Harmon, AR and Joyce SASSER of Yellville, AR; brothers, J.L. He was born April 27, 1911, at Non, Oklahoma, to Jesse and Ida WHITTEMORE SWETNAM. He moved to this area in 1945 from Vernal, Utah, and married Edith M. DAVIS on October 31, 1948. He was a rancher, a Baptist and a World War II U.S Army Corps veteran. Survivors include his son, James SWETNAM; three daughters, Jan HUDSON, Carolyn KIDWELL and Julie GRAVES; a brother, Gale SWETNAM; two sisters, Ina SWETNAM and Billie GRACIA; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and one sister. Visitation was from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. August 15, 2002 at Roller Funeral Home with the family receiving friends from 6-8 p.m. Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, August 16 at Roller Chapel with interment at Pilgrims Rest Cemetery. Mr. EVANS was born November 5, 1935 at Harrison, Arkansas to Russell Thomas and Lila Sue FLIPPIN EVANS. On December 1, 1954, he married Shirley Ann WOLF. He was a real estate broker - Howard's Realty Company of Bull Shoals, AR. Mr. EVANS was a lifetime resident of Marion County. He was a member of the Yellville First Presbyterian Church and former Yellville City Councilman and served as Mayor of Yellville from January 1976 through December 1982. He was a member of the national Board of Realtors, Marion County Regional Water District board member and North Arkansas Board of Realtors, Arkansas State Board of Realtors, Mountain Home Racquet Club Tennis Team and active with South Shore Scholarship awards. He married Anne TURNER of June 29, 1963 at Monroe, Louisiana. He was veterinarian who owned and operated Presley Veterinary Clinic for 25 years. Dr. PRESLEY was a U.S. Navy veteran. Dr. PRESLEY lived in Flippin, Arkansas for 25 years moving from Ames, Iowa. He was raised in the Harrison area. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the American Veterinary Medical Association and the Arkansas Veterinary Medical Association. He was a member of St. Peter the Fisherman Catholic Church.
